We want to believe the extent of our will causes things to happen, so we are responsible for the results. This is a misconception. What we essentially need is meaning- not our own meaning but discovering meaning.  That is the point at which we begin to flourish. Shoving information at brethren and expecting them to remember is not education. Teaching people how to think is teaching then to argue one point of view, then arguing the opposite point of view. We know well that children need to be challenged by difficulty. Having information shoved out is what creates a miserable existence and explains the very unhappy world we live in, the same discontentment we find in masonic order. Dare we ask if we are happier today than we were when we began? We won't survive being soft with masonic learning. We need to encourage toughness of mind and body because there are forces at play ready to impose on us.  This is the argument usually avoided; the purpose of opposites to discover how to think.  Our individuation is necessary within service to the whole; not splitting power but organically unfolding potential.   That circle? One would hope FM was designed to bring an understanding that deeper realities exist. That circle tells us it is foolish to think we arrive at meaning by linear reasoning. We begin with a force pushing us toward freedom of thought drawn by restraint. Take away one and we stagnant. Understanding that opposition is where we find reality, frees us from the burden of believing by will alone, we can remove opposition. Without the unity of opposition we destroy.  Within antagonism is where we find perfection. Entering that circle is where we find we cannot err. Without opposites, we would not exist.
