Each year 200,000 children in England and Wales experience the loss of a parent to the Criminal Justice system. When a parent is sent to prison children go through something akin to bereavement and the experience can seriously damage their outcomes in life. Their housing, education and mental health can be affected and research has demonstrated that a high proportion of these children go on to become offenders themselves.

Action for Prisoners’ Families (APF) is a membership organisation that seeks to improve policy and practice for prisoners’ and offenders’ families and to reduce the negative impact of imprisonment and offending on families across statutory, private, social enterprise, community and voluntary sectors.
