With all due respect, the first modern business format franchise was founded over a half century before McDonalds and it is a story that would make Horatio Alger proud.  Starting life with nothing and working her way out of indentured servitude, Matilda Harper founded a system of salon’s that, at its height, numbers over 500 in the Americas and Europe.
