Entertainment Worldwide NetworkSPOKEN WORD FOREVER” Brings you “Spoken Word and Poetry Slam differences”. Spoken Word comes in 2 formats – closed/invitational and open Mic. Poets are invited by a venue to read their poetry. At a closed/invitational there may be 1 or more featured Poets and usually a theme revolved around the readings. Open mic is where anyone can sign up to read their poetry. There is a limited amount of slots and a 3 -5 minute time restraint on each reading. This is to allow each Poet a chance to read their poetry. The problem that arises is there are usually cliques that surrounds this forum and are there to root solely for their own poets. The cliques are the Poets that frequent the venue on a weekly basis.  On the other hand Poetry Slam is a competition event where Poets duel by performing an oral presentation of their Poetry. Each Poet is judged on their content and performance. 5 judges are selected by the host or someone else that organized the event. The performers are scored anywhere from “0” to “10” and it is based on the Poets content and performance. The rules are Original Work only. 3 minutes to deliver. Points deducted if they run overtime. No props, costumes or music may be used. The high and low scores are dropped and the middle 3 scores are added for a total score for 0 – 30. Successful Poets have an extraordinarily energetic stage presence and connect with the judges and the audience in a dynamic way through their poetry. So whether you prefer the rush that comes from the high energy of being judged or the intimacy of reading your poetry from a page in front of an open mic, the decision is totally up to you.
