At 23 years old and 14 (and a half!) years with type 1 diabetes, Maria is currently pursuing a PhD in Biomedical Engineering (BME) with a focus in physiological modeling. Born in South Dakota & raised in New Jersey, she spent six years acquiring a BME Bachelors and Masters degree with a focus in biomechanics in Connecticut, where she found a passion for rock climbing, ultimate frisbee, and baking desserts. Maria is known to love volunteering, particularly for JDRF locally and Engineers Without Borders internationally. Despite a long standing stint as a professional pin cushion, her involvement with the diabetes community began just this past year. She is always happy to lend her newfound diabetes buddies a smile, a joke, or an alcohol swab.
