Very little is truly known about our universe from how it all started to where we are now to how and if it will all end?  In 1925 Edwin Hubble discovered that the known universe is expanding and that everything in the universe is actually speeding away from each other and that the father away a galaxy is from us, the faster it is moving away! The milky way galaxy that we reside in is moving about approximately 200,000 mph hurtling in space.  That means in about 1 hour, the earth has actually moved in space approximately the distance the moon is away from the earth - each hour of every day!

But what allows the galaxies to continue accelerating away from each other?  The gravitational forces throughout the universe should start to slow the entire "big band" down with an eventual contraction.  However this is not the case and astronomers speculate that dark matter which along with dark energy comprises about 95% of the universe, is the cause.

Judy Sellins and Dave Turco of the Unknown Zone will bring you updated details of the latest thinking about the structure and workings of our Universe.
