What Shines: Aging with Optimism and Appreciation with Sydney Lea

Retrospective of a long life and already an inimitable career in poetry, Sydney Lea’s What Shines asserts and asks in equal measure. In older age, He affirms the luster of fruit long labored for: a resilient and happy marriage; the rewards of parenthood and, later, grandchildren; a profound intimacy with northern New England — the environment, the seasons, the people, home, time. But he also transmits the escalating urgency of answering the fundamental question: at this late hour, what light do we have to see by? What light will outlast us?

Sydney Lea’s 23rd book over the past four decades represents why he was named Vermont’s Poet Laureate and received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts from the Vermont Arts Council. Written primarily during the shuttered time of the COVID pandemic, Lea’s book  reflects deeply in What Shines on aging, and it’s full of  reminiscence–  along with occasional awareness that our memories can play tricks on us.
