Rita Mills' passions are the First Amendment, books, and literacy so it is understandable that her career would take its charted path.  She left The Houston Post, a major metropolitan newspaper, on the '90s to become the Managing Editor of an academic book publisher at the University of Houston.  She has owned The Book Connection since 1996 where she is a book publishing consultant and packages book projects for publishers.  She has a small publishing company where she focuses on children's picturebooks.
