The Dr Elizabeth Show Guest Shelly Baer

Join Dr Elizabeth as she interviews the inspiring Shelly Baer.  Shelly was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at age three, but despite the challenges and limitations she has not let it change the course of her life. She continue to push boundaries, as she has  in the past such as with her two Outward Bound experiences or skiing and dog sledding 6 weeks post hip replacement, among many other adventures. This fearlessness has taken her all over the world from South Africa to Spain.

Shelly created and participated in a powerful  art exhibit called Raw Beauty.   Raw Beauty’s powerful statement and public success encouraged her to become more passionate about educating health care professionals and social work students about disabled women, body image, beauty and sexuality.  She regularly speak to human sexuality and social work classes, in addition to doctors, or as a motivational speaker. 

In February 2011 Shelly was honored with a Red Cross Women’s Spectrum Award in education for her outreach and education for people with disabilities.

In September 2011 she was chosen to give a TEDxMiami talk at their yearly conference at the New World Center on “The Beauty of Disability.”
