Jerry Pournelle is one of the leading lights of modern Science Fiction and is also one of the leading explorers of the fascinating territory where technology intersects with military strategy and tactics.  As a Science Fiction writer, Pournelle is known both for his solo writings, particularly the "Janissaries" series, as well as for his collaborations with other authors, especially his stand out works with Larry Niven, including Lucifer's HammerFootfall, and The Mote in God's Eye.  He has also made a name as an essayest and commentator, serving as a regular contributer to the much-praised computer magazine Byte.  His writing has won numerous awards.  You can find out more about Dr. Pournelle at his website blog, Chaos Manner.
