Steve writes:
"When I began the book, off a half-assed, rather childish outline all those months ago, no one knew that in May 2014, Ukraine was going to be a sort of ground zero, not merely between Russia and Ukraine but also between Russia and the West. I only knew I wanted to tell a story of a brave Soviet woman sniper who was lost to history when "disappeared" after a failed mission in the fall of 1944, as the German army was retreating from its Russian catastrophe."
