In 1952, he joined RCA as a quality control engineer and drafted into the Army working as a radio operator and was discharged in 1954.  Gilbert resumed his position with RCA and eventually moved in the manufacturing engineer department where he participated in the successful transfer of the filament coating and winding operations.
