Dr. Surman is a Psychiatrist, who specializes in the care of surgical patients in the need of organ transplantation at Massachusetts General Hospital. Transplantation is a rapidly growing field that has provided life saving benefits and improved quality of life for many, who face catastrophic illness related to organ failure. Transplantation is unique in its long form relationship, that occurs between the surgical team of associated transplantation professionals in life long care of the transplant recipient. Transplant patients must deal with the wait for an available donor, and the process or adjustment and long term follow up that is required to maximize long term benefits. In this line of work, Dr. Surman has a clear view of the risks of tragedy and misfortune each of us must face. In 1994, he faced his greatest loss in his wife’s incurable illness with ovarian cancer.
