As-Salaam-Alaikum / God's Peace be Upon You,

This Saturday, May 16, 2015, we on Critical Discourse will be honored by the presence of Dr. Shahid Muhammad, the Math Doctor, and author of How to Teach Math to Black Children.

In these challenging times, it is critical and necessary that black children be astute in the art of mathematics, the language of logic and focused, ordered reasoning.

Unfortunately, black children and black people in general, seem to have an aversion to mathematics, which is the precursor to science and engineering, professions where there aren't enough of us.

We are finding ourselves falling behind in this regard, as we engage in a form of hand-wringing, crying "foul" for example, when we (as well as Latinos) place low on Specialized High School Exams, which place heavy emphasis on math.

The question and challenge before us, becomes, "What steps must be taken to reverse this and other academic trends"?

Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus – these are building blocks to the mastery of science, engineering and logical and critical thinking.
