What would happen if we took away all the metal detectors and armed security guards out of our public schools and simply taught children how to respect themselves and each other? Would children be safe from violence at school? There are some educators who are willing to find out. Today, Sherri Bevel, a contributing writer of the book "The Chicago Freedom Movement" and daugthter of the late Rev. James Bevel, a close aid and major strategist for Dr. King's non-violent movement, joins us today to discuss the launching of the Addie Wyatt Training Center For Nonviolence. Chicago's Wendel Phillips High School will undergo a transformation, similar to the successful transformation of North Lawndale College Prep, where students have been introduced to the philosophy of nonviolence and are now enjoying a safe school where students are treated with respect and not made to feel like criminals first thing in the morning with guards and metal detectors. How do we, the adults, change our attitudes and behavior so that our children's schools are no longer "jail prep" institutions? What do parents need to do to create a national movement to reverse the criminalization of our children at school?
