When two single people decide to begin a courtship, if one still has strings attached from a not-quite-resolved previous relationship, this can cause complications. How long after a divorce should one begin seeing other people? How does one set boundaries for an ex-spouse? Today we examine the situation of a couple who are trying to work toward marriage but, according to the woman, there seems to be obstacle in their path; the ex-wife. Nearly a year after their divorce, she still has financial needs, emotional needs, and even hints at physical needs that she is looking to her ex-husband to fulfill. Is it too early to start a courtship with a man who still has a clingy ex-wife? Is it unrealistic to expect her not to call and ask for help with their three minor aged children, beyond the financial support he is willingly providing? How can a woman who is involved with a formerly married man know if his emotional ties have really been severed? Should she speak to the ex-wife? Should she request the man in her life to speak to his ex? Should she just be patient? Should she walk away from this situation altogether? Our relationship advisors Imam Karriem Hameed and Sister Munirah Habeel give their perspective.
