Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah's inspiring true story - which was turned into a film entitled, “Emmanuel's Gift,” narrated by Oprah Winfrey and a book authored by Laurie Thompson called, “Emmanuel’s Dream” – is nothing short of remarkable. Born in Ghana, with one deformed leg, he was dismissed by most people - but not by his mother, who taught him to reach for his dreams.
As a boy, Emmanuel hopped to school more than two miles each way, learned to play soccer, left home at age 13 to provide for his family, and, eventually, became a cyclist. He rode an astonishing 400-miles across Ghana in 2001, spreading his powerful message - disability is not inability. He was later selected to receive ESPN’s ESPY Arthur Ashe Courage Award which was presented by Oprah Winfrey.
Today, Emmanuel plays on the U.S. National Amputee Soccer Team and continues to work on behalf of the disabled. He is in training to cycle from San Diego to Oregon to raise $2 million to build a first-of-its-kind school in Ghana open to people with disabilities and is seeking sponsors.Visit www.EmmanuelsDream.org & www.facebook.com/emmanuel.o.yeboah.5.
