In many African and Diaspora countries, mental illness is not accorded the resources and importance it deserves. This is in spite of the fact that they pose a great burden on the global health of the population. Compared to other areas of health, mental health services are poorly developed. Indeed, most have no mental health policies, programs or action plans in place to combat this scourge. In addition, sufferers are battling stigmatization, lack of support and lack of access to treatment options obtainable elsewhere. Wars, strife, natural disasters Poverty and the HIV/AIDS epidemic have not helped matters.
