Cheryl L. Black is a native New Yorker from Long Island who migrated south after receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications management from Ithaca College. She spent 18 years in the Washington DC area where she earned her law degree from Georgetown Law Center and enjoyed a stellar legal career at the United States Patent and Trademark Office before relocating to the Richmond Virginia area and entering into private practice.

Cheryl has acclimated to southern life and private practice. She holds leadership positions in national, state and local bar associations, including serving as President of the Greater Richmond Intellectual Property Law Association, Vice Chair of the Trademark Inter Partes committee of the American Bar Association Section on Intellectual Property, and Executive Board Committee Member of the Virginia Bar Association Law Practice Management Division.

Cheryl’s passion is educating and mentoring college students. She is a former Adjunct Professor of Media Law at Virginia State University and founder of 2 College and Beyond, a nonprofit organization that provides programs and mentoring to high school African American male teenagers who aspire to attend college. Cheryl is also committed to educating and assisting churches and other faith-based organizations in protecting and enforcing their intellectual property rights, advising them on social media use, and helping them avoid infringement law suits. She is a frequent lecturer on trademarks and copyright law.

Cheryl is a partner at the law firm of Goodman Allen & Filetti and admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the District of Columbia, and before the Canadian Trade-Mark Office.

She lives with her husband and three sons in Glen Allen, Virginia.
