Building upon the Servant Covenant is essential if we want to be called a friend of Jesus. Even the disciples continued to serve the Lord after He called them His friend. As in the Servant Covenant, a secret to the Friendship Covenant is also hidden in the story of Mary and Martha. Jesus told Martha, “Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 That “good part” was serving Christ by sitting at His feet and listening to Him. As a servant, He spoke to them in parables, but as a friend, He told them the hidden mysteries only He and His FATHER knew. Here is the point, if we cannot sit at the feet of Jesus and listen as a servant, we cannot hear what He wants to say to us as a friend. He is not even able to speak to us as a friend until we are able to listen for His voice as a servant.
