Our 4th Of July: Two hundred and forty-one years ago, America independence was established. 

July 4th became a federal holiday in 1941 but it has been celebrated since the 18th Century and the American Revolution. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted to establish the country's independence and on July 4th, 1776, they ratified and established the Declaration of Independence. It has been celebrated ever since.
Did you know that three U.S. Presidents died on July 4th? John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on the very say day - July 4, 1826. James Monroe, our fifth president, died on July 4, 1836 while Calvin Coolidge, a future president, was born on July 4, 1872.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? 

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.. 

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

 Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.

Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well-educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.
