When Isaiah began his ministry, Israel had deteriorated politically, militarily, and spiritually. It was nearing its collapse, which came in with the Assyrian invasion. Judah also had become corrupt and was ripe for a fall under King Ahaz. During the time, Isaiah called Judah to repent of idolatry and moral degeneracy. Sadly, the nation refused to turn back to God. Thus, Isaiah told Judah that their rebellion would lead to captivity by the Babylonians. Isaiah also foretold that, following the captivity, God would restore His people. He prophesied concerning the ministry of the Lord's Servant, who would provide redemption for the whole world. About 700 years later, the "suffering Servant," Jesus Christ, died for sinners, as he had spoken.

Many of us can concoct a plan when we're up against hardship. We try everything to come out ahead. When facing problems, how often do you consider God's plan first? Judah's King Ahaz was worried. Rezin, Syria's king, and Pekah, Israel's king, conspired to overthrow Judah. God sent Isaiah to assure Ahaz that the king would fail, however, Judah suffer consequences because it had not repented and returned to God.
