The Mis-Education of the Negro By Dr Carter Godwin Woodson "The so-called modern education, with all its defects, however, does others so much more good than it does the Negro, because it has been worked out in conformity to the needs of those who have enslaved and oppressed weaker peoples." Originally written in 1933, The Mis-Education of the Negro addresses many issues that are still prevalent within the African American community. Woodson believed that while receiving education, blacks lost sight of their original reasons for becoming educated. He argues that any educational program that does not support an individual's independent critical thinking and lead that person to work for the entire community's advancement is a form of miseducation. He further argues that many only became educated to copy and attempt to become successful under eurocentric standards.
