As a child she suffered 12 years of physical and psychological abuse from her mother, as well as sexual abuse from some of her mother's male acquaintances. After being rescued by the police and CPS she spent 5 years in the foster care system in 14 different placements. Karista was encouraged and felt called to represent Scottsdale in the Triumph over Tragedy pageant because she wants to encourage everyone that they can Triumph over any obstacle in life no matter how big or how small. To that extent she feels that to do so her childhood and life now, is an open book so other people can find a way to relate and realize there is hope. She wants people to know that she has triumphed over childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse, ex-spousal abuse, cancer scares, suicide attempts,  bulimia and continues to daily triumph over weight, chronic health issues, depression,  post traumatic stress disorder, and the safety of her son and yet continue to find a way to smile. She is honored to represent Scottsdale in the Triumph Over Tragedy pageant and will use her title to bring awareness and education to people about abuse of all forms and how to help others find ways to Triumph over life's daily obstacles
