On this week's radio show, we feature a very inspirational story! As a child,Ellie Laks never felt like she belonged - not with her strict parents and not with her peers at school. When she experienced abuse as a young girl, Ellie looked to her dog for comfort and companionship. Later, she pulled herself out of a downward spiral by throwing herself into working with animals, finding strength and healing in their company. The Gentle Barn was founded in 1999 by Ellie and it's based on principles that all living creatures deserve compassion and that animals could be involved in the healing processes for children who are at-risk. Ellie joins me to talk about her new moving memoir, "My Gentle Barn: Creating a Sanctuary Where Animals Heal and Children Learn to Hope."
