In the wide world of sports a certain mentality is necessary for an athlete to truly flourish. It could be a confidence, perhaps even an arrogance, but in the rough and tumble field of combat sports a “wild streak” might make the requirement list.
Mike “Lefty” Brooks, the young, enthusiastic product of Oceanside, N.Y. describes himself as “100% American” and uses his wild streak as a steering wheel inside the boxing ring. His approach to the sport proved to be successful.
He had a 50 fight amateur career, over 40 of which were victories. His most notable win came at the 2008 National PAL Championship, where he decisioned Olympic hopeful Allen Gary Russell. Brooks was ultimately able to earn a top 7 national ranking in the 141 lb. division.
Having traveled the map through boxing, Brooks considers his amateur career the time of his life. Traveling to the likes of California, Michigan and Colorado, Brooks states that he has made a circle of lifelong friends through the sweet science, and written a chapter of his life that he can build and prosper off of as he climbs the professional ranks.
Brooks carried his good fortune into the early stages of his professional career by scoring a knockout in his October 2009 debut. The 23 year old has found the differences from amateur to professional to be in his favor, noting that his power and chin have flourished without head gear. Campaigning at 135 and 140 lbs, the charismatic Brooks is 4-0 as a professional and hopes to bring his brand of boxing to enthusiastic fight fans for years to come.
