The Hype Magazine spoke with Devonte Sanford who as a 14 year old was convicted and imprisoned for nine years based on a fabricated confession crafted by police interrogators.Subsequent to Devonte's imprisonment, the REAL murderer, a hired hitman confessed to these four murders, on top of the other 8 murders he'd been convicted of. While authorities, the court and prosecutor's office were aware of the hitman's confession and statements, they chose to ignore the truth, basically throwing away a child who had no culpability for or knowledge of the murders in question.
After years of legal proceedings, a team of attorneys working pro bono (free), we able to make a case with the prosecutor and court system to launch an investigation. In the end, the new court discovered improprieties in the handling of Devonte's case from the time he was picked up in his pajamas on the sidewalk by his home which was located near the drug house in which the murders were comitted. Devonte was interrogated over the course of several days without the presence of either an attorney or a parent. Police took the developmentally impared and blind in one eye teenager into custody as a possible witness and came away two days later with what was supposed to be a valid confession to the killings. This after having kept him sequestered from legal representation and his distraught family.
