Today, at 12:01 AM, Johannes Mehserle was released from prison.
The Story: On Jan 1st, 2009, Officers responded to reports of a fight on the platform of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Fruitvale Station.
While restraining one of the suspects, Oscar Grant, Officer Maheserle drew his pistol and shot Mr. Grant in the back while another officer had his knee on Grant's neck. The reason: Grant was allegedly resisting arrest.
Most of the incident was captured via the cellphones many BART travellers, causing the worldwide publicity of the incident.
Verdict: Jul 8, 2010, Guilty of Involuntary Manslauter
Sentenced: Nov 5, 2010, 2 yrs minus time served
Total time served: 12 months
