Are Prophets Necessary? If so Why?

The Bible is clear, Prophets in the Old Testiment made a significant impact in both the lives of the children of Israel as well as were a dominate voice in the ear of Kings. However, in the 21st Century it seems as if the role of Prophet has become self defined.
