The NHL is running out of time to save itself from having to cancel totally the 2012-season. There were rumblings this week that the league is targeting a shortened 48-game schedule beginning in January.

The last time the NHL went to 48 games? 1994-95, when the Red Wings advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals before losing to New Jersey. 

Could another shift help the Wings again?
