Have you ever wrangled to reconcile your feelings about the OTHERS…you know, those other than African Americans. Particularly as it relates to the history of slavery, Jim Crow, and even masked discrimination – some call it institutional racism in America – it can be tough to be like Jesus. But if we are balanced in our thinking we have to admit, as African American we can sometimes go overboard – not that racism doesn’t exist, but we can sometimes rule out all of the OTHERS just because we run into one, or two ,or three of the bad OTHERS! This kind of thinking can lead us to make generalizations about people of other races, which results in what is termed reverse racism. Black history month is a great time to reflect and realign our thinking based on what Jesus would do. Enter woman At the well meeting Son of God! But first, are you willing to admit, I’m Christian, black and struggling with racism.
