Maggie Baumer - Reclaiming Her Story

On an October night in 2012, Maggie Baumer had an accident and as a result, lost her hand.  It was the beginning of a series of painful events including multiple surgeries and being separated from her family by Storm Sandy, 

That same night, an online journalist was looking for a story and found Maggie's. The story, which was picked up by several other online publications, distorted what little truth was present and created a devastating narrative where the protagonist is a fool deserving of her fate and losing a limb is funny.

Today, Maggie Baumer reclaims her story. We will discuss her work as a Mental Health Councilor, an advocate for low-income families, and an immigration lawyer.

We will also discuss the pain Maggie Baumer endured from the irresponsible journalism that enabled comments from anonymous people that were cruel, salacious, and narrow-minded.
