The human evolved social political default position has historically been authoritarian (demanding obedient behavior to authority) and or totalitarian (which also demands obedience in thought and emotion).  For several centuries the rise of literacy, literature, universal education and science have led to relationships between authority and those that follow that include mutual respect and increased sharing of decision making in many, but certainly not all parts of the globe. The struggle for human beings to free themselves from the biologically inherited tendencies of authoritarian/totalitarian tribalism and create more democratic social interactions has been constant and ceasless at all levels of human interaction including family life, educational institutions, houses of worship, the relationships between the sexes and the larger political structures that define the tribes themselves. There is a constant struggle both between and within each individual to be both a self motivating person and a good citizen of the larger social units in which every person participates. Tonight's podcast will hopefully be the first of a series to more systematically explore the many intra and interpersonal aspects of the struggle to create and maintain democracy as the main political system defining human interactions. My starting point is based on a long lifetime as a psychologist, educator and psycho"therapist" and my motivation is created by my increasing terror that my children and grandchildren may well live in an America defined by authoritarian/totalitarian tribalism.
