The question before us is how do we create a political system that avoids victimizations as well as idealization and demonization while promoting group cohesiveness and simulataneously respecting and fostering individual expression and creativity? How do we avoid both the horrors of the past such as the holocaust and the nightmares of the present such as those taking place in Syria. I will suggest that we recognize that while commerce makes life possible, good education and the arts, including music, fine arts, dance and literature not only make life worth living but sensitize us to the beauty that can come from any and all human beings.
