On Sunday, June 24 at 8p/7c, “Dateline” will air America Now: Lost In Suburbia, a revealing and emotional look at suburban poverty in America. According to a recent government report, the median American family lost nearly 40% of its net worth between 2007 and 2010. Middle-class Americans were hit the hardest. And, for the first time in U.S. history, there are more poor people living in the suburbs than in cities.

Last fall, “Dateline” began following three formerly middle-class families as they confronted poverty for the first time. “Dateline” cameras rolled as these families faced situations they never thought they would experience: asking family for financial support, relying on food pantries to feed their children and potentially losing their homes. “Dateline” anchor Lester Holt shares their personal stories and their struggles to retain the American dream.
