She graduated from John H. Reagan High School. She went on to pursue a college degree, graduating from St. Edwards University with a B.A. Degree in Social Work. Ms. Miller-Shanklin worked at United Cerebral Palsy for a year. She then had a long career with Austin Travis County Integral Care for 17 years. She worked as a Service Coordinator and Service Coordinator Supervisor in the Developmental Disability Unit. She is now the founder and Publisher of Ujima Magazine, which has been in existence for a year. She is married with three dogs, Solomon, Tanner and Mia.
