How do people help people to help themselves on multiple levels? Through crowdsource funding for charities that promote self-reliance. Our guest is Mari Kuraishi.
Mari Kuraishi, Global Giving
In 1997 Mari Kuraishi and fellow World Bank Executive Dennis Whittlewere were asked to develop new and innovative ways to combat poverty. They created the World Bank's Development Marketplace, a first-of-its-kind event where people from around the world competed for World Bank funds.
The event's success showed the enormous potential of a global marketplace for philanthropy, and the idea to open a virtual one that operated year round was born. Mari and Dennis left World Bank to make the vision a reality through Global Giving.
