Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disease that's caused by an abnormal hemoglobin which causes the blood to take on a crescent or "sickled" shape. The sickled red blood cells are fragile and prone to rupture. Once the cells become sickled, it's difficult for them to pass through the vessels and they become stuck. Once this happens, one can face chronic pain, organ or tissue damage, strokes, even death.
