Join me Monday, October 14th at 6 p.m. Pacific/9 Eastern on Radio Enso. My guest will be advocate, writer, and yoga teacher Marianne Elliott, the Zen Peacekeeper. Marianne is the author of Zen Under Fire, her story of love and work in Afghanistan.

About Marianne Elliott: I’m a writer, a yoga teacher and a human rights consultant. Above all else, I collect, craft and tell stories. Whether I’m writing a report on violence again women in Afghanistan, raising funds for a great cause, helping a client share their good work with the world or writing my memoir –my craft, my medium and my passion is story. I teach yoga through stories. Because stories are how we make sense of the past and how we imagine new futures. Stories are how we come to new understandings about each other, how we change our view of the world, how we teach, and how we learn.

About Zen Under Fire: In 2006 Marianne Elliott, a human rights lawyer from New Zealand, was stationed with the UN in Herat. Several months into her new role a tribal leader is assassinated while she is in charge of the local UN office. She must defuse the situation before it leads to widespread bloodshed.

Zen Under Fire is a vivid account of Marianne’s experience living and working in the world’s most notorious battlefield. As well as sharing the incredible details of her UN role, Marianne tells the very personal story of the shattering effect that the high-stress environment had on her and her relationships, and asks what it really means to do good in a country that is under siege from within.
