Summer-izing Social Sites

There are many, many social media sites to which one can belong and subscribe. Some are becoming more popular while others seem to have fallen through the floor. What makes them popular? Why are some better for some situations and not so good for others? When and why would you consider a new social media or getting out of one you are in now?
