Late 2015 has seen a number of incredibly popular game releases: titles that have sold millions of copies and reached a wider audience than ever before. With that, comes increasing costs for the studios behind these games. Some of the most popular games this year have come with enormous price tags. Kojima Productions’ Metal Gear Solid 5 cost the studio 80 million dollars. CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3 came with a total cost of 82 million dollars, and Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 5 came out to a grand total of 265 million dollars, with 128 million of that being spent on marketing alone. With such ridiculous costs, independent game developers and amateurs are facing stiff competition. Unable to compete with the costs, many have turned to alternative methods for funding and development. New platforms like Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, and Steam Greenlight are allowing indie studios to get better funding and more options for publishing, but these come with their own controversies as well.
