Members of the civil rights community and state Democrats have met a voter identification bill proposed in the NC General Assembly with stiff opposition. The bill co-sponsored by Republican Ric Killian of Charlotte, would require voters to show state issued photo identification before casting a ballot and those without photo identification could cast provisional ballots.

Local civil rights groups that include the Charlotte chapter of the NAACP and the Urban League of the Central Carolinas called the bill exclusionary singling out certain historically disenfranchised groups and a return to days when African Americans were prevented from voting.
