Nicole's Guest: Thea Monyee

From filming two episodes of HBO's Def Poetry Jam in New York to Da Poetry Lounge in Los Angeles and countless colleges and universities in between, Thea Monyee shares her vision with audiences nationwide. She has appeared on television in BET's The Way We Do It and Lyric Cafe, and has been heard on such Los Angeles radio stations as 102.3 KJLH, 92.3 The Beat, and 90.7 KPFK. Monyee is also an emcee who ignites stages with live music and relevant lyrics with her husband, Gaknew Roxwel.

Influenced by the writings of Daniel Quinn, Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Octavia Butler, Marshall Rosenburg, and many others, Monyee spends her time offstage working with foster youth and is currently a marriage and family therapist in Los Angeles, California.

Her most recent project is "Sex and Sisterhood," a workshop co-presented with HBO Def Poet Mayda del Valle, focused on relationship building among women. In addition, she has facilitated women's self-awareness groups, teen relationship support groups, and hip-hop poetry workshops for children ages nine to 18. After eight years Monyee completed her first solo poetry album entitled in/Tuition.
