The Tea Party movement first gained national notice this past April 15, when over 500,000 Americans turned out at hundreds of rallies around the nation to express their opposition to President Obama's fiscal policies. Since then, the Tea Party movement has been at the center of the American political debate, drawing praise from conservative and libertarian political leaders and condemnation from liberals, including Obama, who has denounced the movement on several occasions. The success of the National Tea Party movement is a product of extraordinary grassroots enthusiasm, combined with sophisticated national political leadership. Without doubt, it is one of the most exciting movements in American politics today. Michael Johns, a former White House speechwriter and Heritage Foundation policy analyst, spoke at three of the largest Tax Day Tea Party rallies this past April in Boston, New York City and Philadelphia and is one of several national leaders of the Tea Party movement.
