Although she wasn’t a rock star, never mind a classic rock star, which is usually our focus genre, Naomi Judd was just the latest well-known musician in recent weeks to have committed suicide. In light of her recent death, we thought we might discuss the plight of those close friends and family who are left behind when someone takes their own life.

Tonight’s topic deals with survivors of suicide, meaning those who are left behind to grieve (to avoid any confusion, we do NOT mean those who attempted suicide and failed).

Our show began back in the summer of 2016 with our first show on Musicians and Suicide. Since then, we have discussed several related topics on Suicide, Depression, Death, Grieving, and similar notions.

We’ve covered myriad angles on death and dying, suicide, depression, grieving, supporting others, and related topics. Tonight, we specifically want to focus on Coping Mechanisms and Support for those who remain behind, from those who have committed suicide. Different kinds of losses and grieving can vary somewhat, and there are aspects that are specific to losing someone to suicide.

Tonight, we will discuss:

  1. An Overview of Suicide Survivors
  2. What is Different about Grieving Someone who Committed Suicide
  3. Common Misunderstandings about Grief, Especially This Type
  4. Conclusions, Closing Remarks, & Final Suggestions

We'll start off the evening with some topic-relevant Classic Rock played by Dr. Mathis, followed by Classic Rock trivia in "The Rock & Roll Shrink Recalls," followed by our topic discussion.
