The Marcia Engel Story: Sexual Abuse in the Foster Care System

The trauma for children who are ripped from abusive homes - even in an attempt to rescue them from abusive family members- can be devastating. But imagine the horror of being subject to sexual abuse while in the foster home that is supposed to be a refuge or "safe haven." This is too often the case for many children who have been in the foster-care system. In fact, according to a study conducted by John Hopkins University, the rate of sexual abuse within the foster-care system is more than four times as high as in the general population. What is also quite disturbing is how easy it is for a normal family to have a child removed from their home and placed in an abusive foster home.
