Numerology comes to us from antiquity given the fact that Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician who lived from 569-495 B.C., is said by many to be the originator of much of what we call numerology today. St. Augustine of Hippo (354–430 A.D.) wrote that "Numbers are the Universal language offered by the deity to humans as confirmation of the truth." Similar to Pythagoras, he too believed that everything had numerical relationships and it was up to the mind to seek and investigate the secrets of these relationships or have them revealed by Divine Grace.

According to numerologists, everything in the world is dependent upon the mystical properties of numbers. These properties come from each number’s inherent cosmic vibration. Since even letters have a numeric value associated with it we can say that numerology is the language of the universe. Based on the belief that a person comes into this life on a certain date with a certain name, numerology reveals numbers that describe who a person is and what the map is for his or her life.

Even the frequency with which numbers are repeated in the Bible tells us something about the importance of and meaning associated with certain numbers. Take the number 40 as an example. There are at least ten instances in the Bible that speak to this number as a measure of the passing of time. We are told it rained for 40 days and 40 nights; Moses was on the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights; the Israelites wandered for 40 years; Jesus fasted in the wilderness for 40 days and was seen on the earth for 40 days after His crucifixion. A 40-something time period then, whether measured in days, months, or years always denotes a period of testing, trial, probation, or chastisement (but not judgment) and ends with a period of restoration, revival or renewal.
