What is unique about sports is that the discussion of legacy is just as important as the stats and championships. It is the explanation point and the end of a career. But unlike the stats and championships, a legacy is fragile and can be damaged due to a myriad of reasons.

In the past two years we’ve seen athletes who despite their illustrious careers, find themselves on the outside looking in as it pertains to how we will remember them; Terrell Owens, Roger Clemons, Joe Paterno, and many others have a shadow hovering over them and will certainly be remembered for events occurring off the field more so than those occurring on it.

At the same time, we Lebron James who with one championship may have erased the burden of underachiever forever and will now have his name mentioned with some of the greatest to ever play the game.

Tonight discussion why is an athlete’s legacy so fragile and what steps can one take to repair the damage? It can happen as in the case of Michael Vick, Mike Tyson and A Rod. But what were the circumstances that afforded them the opportunity that is not present with others?
