The spirit of self denial is rude to the face of an idolatrous nation. The Word of God tells us that we must hate our life in order to graduate to the wonders of a life in true fellowship with the King. Do you hate your life? Not just certain aspects of your life, but your entire life (all the attributes, characteristics and habits that you have inherited from Adam) but been disposed of. There is no gray area here. Jesus makes it very plain here: “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me” (Matthew 16:24). I bet many of you just found out you also have a cross. Once you say yes to Christ, you move immediately into the long line to receive your cross.
The cross reflects the similitude we have with Jesus. Every step He took to redemption and reconciliation, we must also take. You cannot skip the “cross” and go straight to redemption and finish the race at salvation and reconciliation without embracing the adversity assigned to you with your cross.
I wonder what mockery was burned into the wood on your cross. The Pharisees mocked Jesus with a “King of the Jews” inscription on His Cross. What does your cross say? Does it read, “Harlot”, “whoremonger”, "murderer" or "thief"?
