Lincoln MKX Presents BLACK HISTORY: Hey, Mr. Carter

History Meets Hip-Hop host Syreeta Gates, who can also be heard weekly on New York's WBAI public radio, pays homage to Black History Month via its founder, Carter G. Woodson—and his slew of equally accomplished namesakes. "Godwyn, Dwayne, Betty, Bunchie and Shawn. What do they have in common?" she asks before launcing into the infectious Lil' Wayne track Mr. Carter. "As Kanye West said, 'I make black history every day. I don't need a month.' And we don't. But we are still appreciative," she adds. "What bridges hip-hop for me are four people in three generations: My grandmother, born in 1926, as part of the great migration from North Carolina landed in Harlem. My mother was born in 1950, in the era of the Black Panters, Young Lords and Motown sound. And then my uncles, born in the late 60s, grew up in the 80s—the real hip-hop era."
